NC fire chief killed in tractor-trailer crash

Chief Sam Butler, 52, was attempting U-turn to respond to accident when tractor-trailer collided with his vehicle

MAXTON, N.C. — The Fire Chief of Robeson County's Evans Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department in N.C. died in a car accident Sunday.

Chief Sam Butler, 52, was traveling eastbound on I-74 and attempted a U-turn to respond to an accident in the westbound lanes when a tractor-trailer collided with his vehicle.

Chief Butler was not wearing a seatbelt and died on impact, investigators said.

The driver of the semitrailer was not hurt and will not face charges.
