Residential fire in Portland

Department: Portland Fire Department - [Portland, Oregon]

Portland Fire & Rescue responded at 1212 hrs Sunday to a residential fire. The house is located at 1304 SW Freeman St. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke showing from a 1 story residence with a daylight basement on the back side of the residence. Crews entering the 1st floor area found heavy smoke and small amounts of fire coming from the floor vents. A second crew entering through the basement quickly knocked down the flames in the basement kitchenette area. All occupants escaped with not injuries. A cat escaped and was found in the backyard. Unfortunately a dog in the basement had died. There is heavy smoke damage in the house and the floor in the living room was weakened because of the fire below. The cause of the fire is combustible material on the stove. A occupant had used the stove around 1130 and thought the burner was off. A garbage can was later placed next to the stove burner and caught fire. Estimated value of the building: $300,000 with a loss of $50,000. Estimated value of the contents: $50,000 with a loss of $20,000. 5 Engines, 2 Trucks, 1 Rescue, 2 Chiefs, 1 Investigator, and 1 Rehab unit responded to the scene. A total of 42 firefighters on scene. Crews remained until approx. 1500 hrs. PF&R reminds everyone to keep combustible material away from cooking or heating devices. Never leave cooking unattended; make sure devices are turn off and cooled down. This also ties into the residential fire last night caused by an unattended candle. Please make sure candles are extinguished if you leave the room.
