On July 9 at 3:40 a.m., the Fort Oglethorpe (Ga.) Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire on Miller Drive, off of Steele Road, near the Tennessee state line. When Fort Oglethorpe Engine 10 arrived on the scene, they reported heavy involvement and immediately requested automatic aid from the East Ridge (Tenn.) Fire Department. Firefighters with Engine 10 started a primary attack with a 1 ¾-inch hoseline.

The second in engine company brought a supply hose from a nearby fire hydrant and quickly started assisting with firefighting efforts. The structure was an older trailer and the fire spread quickly. Although firefighters made an aggressive attack on the fire, the blaze was well seated and moved quickly throughout the trailer. The heavy tin roof structure collapsed on the fire, causing an oven effect on the burning debris, making extinguishing efforts difficult.

Firefighters were eventually able to peel the tin roof off the debris and completely extinguish the remains. Unfortunately, the fire destroyed the structure. Two people, a man and a woman were at home when the fire broke out. Fortunately, they were able to escape the fire without injury.
